Brett Charles Barrett

Born in Skipton, North Yorkshire, in 1965, I first picked up the guitar at the age of 13. At 16, I went on to study music at the Harrogate School of Music and Arts, where I was taught by Peter Newsome and Mark Stockall.

My introduction to guitar making came through luthier and jazz guitarist Charlie Crabtree, who showed me how to build my first guitar. At the time, I couldn't afford a high-quality instrument, yet I needed one for music school. Building my own guitar was the only way I could achieve that, and it marked the beginning of a lifelong appreciation for the craft.

During this period, I became good friends with Robin Pearson and Kate Dickinson of the Spanish Guitar Centre in Nottingham, where I also met luthier Kenneth Roberts, who was building guitars for Robin Pearson. At that stage, however, I had no ambition to become a guitar maker myself—I wanted to pursue a career as a concert guitarist.

I spent many years studying The Classical Guitar: Its Evolution, Players and Personalities Since 1800 by Stanley Doubtfire, fascinated by the art and history of guitar making. I continued performing as a concert guitarist until the age of 21, after which I took a long break from the instrument, only playing occasionally.

The death of my father in 2007 inspired me to return to the guitar with renewed purpose. It was then that I began building Spanish classical guitars in earnest. I make each instrument using traditional methods inspired by Antonio de Torres and José L. Romanillos. I have always admired the exceptional sound of Romanillos guitars, particularly those played by Julian Bream, and the beauty of Romanillos' distinctive rosette designs has remained a lasting inspiration.

Today, my guitars are played by Spanish guitarist Paco Seco and have been performed in concert by Alan Brinley Shaw, Norway's Christina Sandsengen, Thu Le, Christian Saggese, and Italy's Andrea Dieci. It is a privilege that these outstanding concert guitarists have also become good friends over the years.

My goal is simple: to make each guitar better than the last, creating instruments that inspire musicians and enrich their performances. Every guitar I build reflects my dedication to the traditions of the great Spanish masters while striving for continual refinement in tone, craftsmanship, and playability.
